Put a couple hours into this fellow last night. ArenaNet has an internship deal going on, and I figured I’d take a crack at modeling on of the drawings they posted. I have it on good authority that the concept art is by Matt Barrett.

Turtle Power

Well it’s that time of year again. The Comicon Challenge is under way over at GA. My humble offering will be a Native American “Ninja” Turtle, or Teenage Mutant Navajo Turtle, though there’s nothing specifically Navajo about it. I wanted to really have fun with the proportions on this one, and try to strike a good mix of detail with playfulness. Whimsy is something I’m consciously trying to inject in my work as of late. I’ve got the body and some of the clothing blocked out, but everything is subject to change if I wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat with a better idea.

Did a quick mandrill study. I tried to strike an aesthetic balance between active areas and areas of rest in the fur. I see a lot of people go nuts with clay tubes or rakes when they do hair or fur, and I think it just ends up looking noisy most of the time. Anyway, here’s the monkey.

CANVAS Concepts

I’ve started work on some bystander crowd NPCs for the CANVAS project. I’m really stoked, because I’ve been wanting to get some gimmick-free, “normal” people in my portfolio. Normal anatomy, normal proportions, normal clothing, etc. It may not sound terribly exciting, but as an artist it is a very marketable skill to show you have. Anyway, here are some rough concepts I’ve come up with. That’s another thing that excites me about working on this project; I get to do my own concept work. That’s always fun! I’m not a professional concept artist by any stretch, but I’m no slouch with a pencil either. While these may not be gorgeous color renderings, they were quick to iterate through and get approval on from the project lead, and they’re quite functional for me to start my work in ZBrush as I continue to push the designs with more detail. That’s the great thing about ZBrush – it’s ability to be used as a concepting tool.

I made a custom Decimation menu for ZBrush. It may not look like much, but it keeps me from having to zip all over the UI for all the things I use during the process of decimation. Now it’s all in one tidy area!
